ARISAWA TATSUKI
Project Hougyoku: an undercover mission funded by the government to develop an almost never-ending source of power, one with the capacity to fuel all ships and eliminate the need for reserves. For decades, the Feds sent grants to a secret research center hidden in the midst of all the factories on Epsilon-3, away from the prying eyes of wannabe spies and rebels. If everything progressed according to plan, the future of the solar system would be secure. Ships would no longer have to stop for refueling in the middle of a long trip, causing backlog and delay. Citizens would no longer have to worry about diminishing supplies of oil or gas, and instead effort could be put towards research and expansion.

Of course, the idea of having a monopoly over humanity’s main source of power was an appealing thought as well.

Like most of the citizens living on Epsilon-3, the Arisawa family was completely unaware of the developments occurring under their very noses. Daughter to a prosperous Japanese factory owner and his American wife, Tatsuki lived a lockstep life, taught to abide by a strict set of rules set by her parents, the product of a factory of discipline. As an only child, Tatsuki was also placed under heavier burdens than most girls her age, expected to take over the factory and its workings when the time came, and she stood up to the challenge, earning good grades in her classes and spending extra hours learning the inner workings of manufacturing and trade.

However, taking up the weight of such burdens made Tatsuki a very easy target for her peers, most of whom mocked her for being a “mere” girl and pushed her around for standing out regardless. As a result, the young girl developed a very brash, aggressive personality, both to fend off enemies and to rise in the eyes and ranks of the informal network of children with roots in industry. In her spare time, Tatsuki could frequently be found wandering the alleys, accompanied a few other young hoodlums in the city with too much time on their hands. Under their influence, ‘rules’ soon became ‘guidelines,’ and the complex network of factory regulations was now simply a new game to be played. Risks increased in level as the group grew older, and by the time Tatsuki was nearing legal age, she had a target far more interesting than the mere factories that were dotted throughout the city.

For hidden between the large automobile factories at the outskirts of town was a small, stark white building, one that had been there as long as anyone could remember but whose purpose was a complete mystery. Warning signs were splayed along the high-rising fences that lined the perimeter of the structure, but as far as Tatsuki was concerned, the need to satisfy her curiosity was far more pressing. Soon enough, the soft tapping of her shoes on the linoleum echoed throughout the equally stark halls inside as Tatsuki wandered into a large lab, eyes widening as her gaze fell upon a large, iridescent crystal in the middle of the room.

The sign below read: HOUGYOKU PROTOTYPE 002.

Mesmerized by its shimmering reflections, Tatsuki had reached out to take the crystal in her hands.

And then the alarms sounded.

Three days later, a young boy with messily hacked locks boarded the Future 7, bidding farewell to home and greeting a future that had come too early.
